Free Your Inner Girl Boss

I forgot how much I loved magazines. While trying to be somewhat/a bit more cost-conscious, I cancelled my NextIssue subscription. The premium package costs peanuts at $14.99 a month so it certainly wasn’t because of the money. For some reason I just did it. But now I have it back and I’m loving it just as much, if not more than before!

sjpToday while reading InStyle’s September Issues, I ran across an article by Sarah Jessica Parker (aka Carrie Bradshaw in Sex in the City) titled, “How to Free Your Inner Boss“. Don’t we all need this?! I certainly do! In the article, SJP lists 7 tips to find your girl boss. My favorite? KNOW WHEN TO PASS. Don’t you just love that concept? If you don’t want to do something, don’t do it. If you don’t want to go somewhere, don’t go. If you don’t want to give, don’t give. If you don’t want to work somewhere, don’t work there! If you don’t want to participate in something, don’t participate. If you prefer not to be around certain people or in certain situations, don’t! You don’t owe anyone an explanation, period. But there is one catch, as SJP mentions – if you sign up, no complaining!

Here’s the complete list of tips from SJP:

  • Be ready to learn.
  • Know when to pass. [my personal fav]
  • Don’t be too proud to apologize – even down the road.
  • Keep your mouth shut sometimes.
  • Brace yourself for failure.
  • Inspire those around you [to be fabulous, duh!]
  • Take breaks for the fun of it.

Happy Bossing!

10 Time Saving Tech Tips

techtipsI’ve told you this story once before but before I share the contents of today’s post I want to tell it again (for fun). Early in my career while playing a game of Taboo on a work outing, one of my co-workers, also a software engineer, started his turn to have us all guess a word. He grabbed his card, looked at all of us and said the following, “Control V.” That’s it. That was his clue. Do you know the answer? We all immediately guessed the correct answer – Paste – as in the keyboard shortcut to insert text you previously copied (using Control C). After that we moved on to the next clue, without even giving what had just happened a moment’s thought!

Tech columnist David Pogue shared 10 simple, clever tips for computer, web, smartphone and camera users in a TED talk. Yes, this is how computer / software / techies think – all the time! What’s the SIMPLEST EASIEST way to get something done without exerting any extra energy or motion. I’m laughing out load at this very moment (literally). While you’re at it, take a look at my own personal list, Tech 101, and enjoy the rest of your day!
